Staging Artists is a two-week performance and design workshop led by Mona Camille and Olivier Van Den Hende – and tailored for the AAIS program.
The workshop will cover many grounds and tools in devised theatre, performance art, video art, ensemble performance and object theatre.
We will draw on previous works from the students developed in their writing workshop to offer introductory acting tools in breaking down a text and its intentions – as well as offering a foundation for body awareness in a performance context – through daily exercises, research, and analysis. All of which are strongly linked and informed by design thinking.
This will all be paralleled with the two artists' research on performance with classical music and around the theme of daily activities.
This year’s brief which deals with the use of masks to disguise our true selves and identities – will set the conceptual framework for our making with the students - all keeping in the AAIS approach which focuses heavily on entrepreneurial, devised, multi-disciplinary and spatial work.
The expected outcome is for the students to leave the workshop with a better understanding of ensemble performance, collaborative performance making, and multi-disciplinary performance with tools to tackle both movement and text work as a performer – and with a better understanding of how to generate material for performance and be a director in the context of a devised performance piece.
We will deliver a video piece of the ensemble performance as well as individual videos of each performance not only made as an archive but as an artwork, which can be assessed and reflected upon later in the students' journey – being used to add to their logbooks. This will proceed to the final performance presentation which will be delivered in front of a live audience.
